Spring Onions – NEW FOR APRIL 2025
Scheduled for the 3rd week of April, high-quality onion seedlings will become available from Tee’s Plants. This is the optimal planting time in Chatham-Kent for these robust varieties. Tee’s onions are now sold in shallow pots, similarly sized to years previous but without the cells to allow for easier separation. To reserve a variety, or if you just generally require a lot, pre-ordering (order@teesplants.com) is highly recommended. Sets include 15-25 onions. Plant them the week you receive them to maximize the bulb size. Tee’s Plants offers the highest performing varieties around – good luck finding these at your other nurseries! Order your onions before the end of February, or risk not getting any!

Please note that some onions will also be available mid-May – early June for delayed and companion planting, which will still produce delicious, medium-sized onions in Chatham-Kent. As a matter of fact, I recommend planting onions at this time! Tee’s Plants ONLY offers “first-year” onion seedlings (NOT second year SETS) to maximize your success! There’s no need to worry about the variety’s required day length, since Tee’s only offers onion cultivars that excel at our latitude. Keep in mind! Onions sold out in 2024! Not only do onions store well, but they can save you some cash. 15 large white or red onions (just like the White Wing and Red Wing onions Tee’s offers) would run you a current estimated $37 at the grocery store. Plus, you don’t have to wait until the onions are fully grown. You can harvest and use them fresh at any time through the summer. Or, you can dry them a bit for storage late summer/early fall! (I do both!)

Cucumbers
Tee’s Plants offers a special selection of cucumbers beyond what other nurseries offer, like parthenocarpic varieties. Most of my cucumbers come in my larger 4″ pot size.
A Parthenocarpic cucumber is a type of cucumber that develops fruit without pollination, making it ideal for greenhouse or indoor growing where pollinators are limited. They also produce seedless fruit. Don’t let the price for these plants turn you down – the seed breeders know they’re worth it, and I promise they’re right. I have tested and approved these cucumber over years of testing.

🐝Pollinator Flowers🦋
To simplify things, many varieties will be labelled as either perennials or annuals.
- Annuals – are more than likely going to last one season and then die after the first frost and not return the next year. They can however spread seeds which may germinate into new plants the next Spring.
- Perennials – Can last through the winter for many years, sometimes perpetually. They can also spread seeds and some will reliably divide from the root zone. Many will return without much attention.
If you want more birds, you need more caterpillars. To get more caterpillars, you need more butterflies. For more butterflies, you need more flowers, and for more flowers, you need more bees. It becomes obvious when you achieve this, and it can happen quickly. Someone has to do it.
– an old Friend of the Bees, 2023
🦋Milkweed (Asclepias)🦋
- Milkweed – $3 each, all of these milkweed are perennial here in Chatham-Kent. Use some of these to attract egg bearing monarchs!
- Common – is a favorite among monarch butterflies for laying their eggs. Good general choice.
- Swamp – thrives in wetter soils and is a magnet for pollinators, including the monarch butterfly. This one is my favorite. Can flower 1st year.
- Showy – lives up to its name with large, pink blooms that bees adore. Less desired by monarchs.
- Butterfly – adds a vibrant pop of orange to gardens while attracting a variety of butterflies. Can flower 1st year.
🦋Rudbeckia🐝
Rudbeckias are a must-have for the home owner looking to diversify their garden. Perennial types serve as excellent “lazy” options, and ones like Goldblitz are dependable to return for years, offering impressive colour without needing to re-purchase and plant annually. Featuring NEW annual types showing off unique flower characteristics! Most won’t start to flower until at least July, so please select with your imagination in full operation!

- Perennial Rudbeckias
- Goldsturm $4 – A great classic perennial option.
- Goldblitz $5 – New improved type of Goldsturm, with more but smaller diameter blooms. This is my favorite!
- Cappuccino $4 – An interesting variety with smooth transition of bold darker tones.
- Black Eyed Susan $3 (seeds from Canadian Wildlife Federation) – Recommended variety for attracting bees, butterflies, birds, and more! FOTB approved!
- Think of Goldsturm and Goldblitz as Black Eyed Susans but bred for your eyes instead of the pollen for the bees. They’re still appropriate for your pollinators too though, so don’t be discouraged!
- Think of Goldsturm and Goldblitz as Black Eyed Susans but bred for your eyes instead of the pollen for the bees. They’re still appropriate for your pollinators too though, so don’t be discouraged!
- Annual Rudbeckias
- Maya Double $4 – Fascinating and unique double petaled rudbeckia.
- Chocolate Orange $4 – As its name implies, it’s a beautifully toned flower that will welcome pollinators to your garden.
Note: even though these are technically annual, they will more than likely self-seed and provide you with volunteer flowers next Spring or Summer. The perennial types will do the same. They’re not noxious weeds at all and are very easy to control if you are concerned about that possibility.
